I am the Light of the World
In 2010, a team from the University of Sheffield in England announced the discovery of the brightest and biggest star in the universe. Labeled R136a1, the star is ten million times brighter than our sun. It's amazing that a star this bright could go undetected for millennia.
As He healed a man of blindness, Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." The man's movement from darkenss to light was both physical and spiritual. In a dark, sinful world, Jesus came to shed His light on the truth about God, Himself, and us.
While on earth, Jesus went unknown to almost everyone. John wrote, "The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, yet the world did not know Him" (John 1:9-10).
Today, a third of the earth's population knows this Morning Star, this light of the world. Jesus took His title and gave it to His followers. He said, "You are the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14). We shine His light like stars. People hear of Jesus as the light of the world from us, that they may believe, and the light shines brighter still.
