A Candle Blessing On All Hallows Eve
Give each child a candle. Clean out the inside of a pumpkin. Carve a smiling face on the pumpkin. Talk about the joy of laughing together. Tell students that smiles, laughter, and joy are simple gifts that God gives us to erase sadness and fear. Ask them how they feel when they see a scary pumpkin. How do they feel when they look at a smiling one? Then share with the the wonder that each of us has within us the power to be a light like Jesus. We become the light that can erase evil, anger, pain, and sadness. The light in us is just like Jesus' light. Put a large candle in your smiling pumpkin. Watch the flame as it fills the darkened room. Notice how much more intense the smile becomes with the light shining through. Ask chidren to hold their candles in front of them as you pray:
God who created pumpkins and people, bless our beautiful Halloween light. This light reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world. Jesus shines through the darkness and turns the night into day, sadness into joy, hate into love and tears into smiles. Bless the candles that we hold. Let them be a reminder that we are your candles lightening up the smiles and hearts of our friends and family. Bless the happy pumpkins we will carve for our candles, that everyone who sees them might never be afraid of the darkness because Your wonderful light is within us.
